Burns Model Aircraft

Nearly Indestructible Combat Wing for the R/C Flyer!

Z-Wing

Designed and Built by Larry Burns & David Burns

Z Wings & the Mini Z Wings are manufactured by Burnsmodelaircraft.com from EPP (Expanded Polypropylene Foam) and the wings are strengthened and maintain their shape with  Carbon Fiber Spar trailing edges and/or leading edges.   They can be flown on cliff, ridges, in thermals or fly with an electric motor.  You can also use a High-Start System consisting of a bungee cord with 90 pound fishing line to fly with by attaching it to the bottom of the wing with a common drapery hook and reinforced packing tape or for a cleaner look, design your own type of hook/release system. So, those of you who do not have a cliff to fly from, you are not limited in your flying.

Z Wings & the Mini Z Wings have been tested and proven over and over for years and each one withstands tremendous abuse. We have had many head-on collisions with absolutely no damage to the Z Wings or to the radio gear. Beginners have dived a Z Wing from over 75 feet up, and crashed directly into a concrete sidewalk and the only damage was a slightly crumpled nose and scuffed covering which was straightened out with a hot iron!  We personally had one of our Z Wings to land in the street at Redondo Beach, on the Esplanade here in California,  and a Honda SUV drove onto the Z Wing and skidded to a stop with its right front tire on the center of the  Z Wing , right where the receiver was, with no damage to the receiver or servos and the only damage was some abrasion to the covering on the underside and the winglets had to be remounted in the field.  We flew the Z Wing within 10 minutes of the incident.  We cannot promise you that you will never sustain radio damage in a crash.  It  is possible to crack a crystal if you are still using older radios with 72 MHZ or possibly damage other types of receivers or servos, you could damage or destroy the battery pack.  No plane or radio gear is safe from possible damage, but we can tell you that the  Z Wings & the Mini Z Wings are nearly indestructible in combat flying conditions.

Z Wings & the Mini Z Wings are designed for combat flying and cliff soaring and they have some of the best flying characteristics combined into a single flying wing through the airfoil design.  Each has an overall light flying weight about 16 ounces and a fast semi-symmetrical airfoil with low stall speed characteristics.  The result is a smooth, fast and highly maneuverable flying wing which will stay aloft even in the lightest breeze.

FUN STUFF: We have had great fun just hand-launching our Z Wings at a football field just to see how many circles around the field that we could make.  You can play a modified Frisbee style golf with these Z Wings.  It is great fun for two or more fliers to go out to a large field with trees and take turns teeing off from a spot to a predetermined location and see which of them can get closest in the shortest number of throws.  Sometimes you can choose to fly to and around a tree or two to see if you can make it  back and spot land your  Z Wings.  The method of scoring is simple.  The first person closest is "0", second is "1" , third is "2" and so on.  You can be quite ahead of the pack and suddenly be in last place.  You will be surprised to see just how these wings can take such harsh punishment and sustain little or no damage.  Usually the only damage is minor scuffing of the covering from hitting a tree.  We hope you enjoy your new Z Wings & the Mini Z Wings and wish you many years of great flying fun!
